What is DBT

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a form of cognitive-behavioural treatment for people who are prone to react intensively in certain emotional situations.  Often individuals who should partake in this kind of treatment have experienced more emotional stimulation than what is considered average, and thus take more time to return to a baseline standard. This condition is borderline personality disorder. It is developed through an inability to cope with certain situations which is then characterised by intensive surges and swings of emotion. The unique treatment model for this has seen rapid growth in the mental health industry for its success in effectively treating groups with emotional problems. DBT Training is in growing demand as a means to expand knowledge and expertise in the mental health field.

Types of DBT

This therapy can be delivered in a number of forms to support individuals with such difficulties. For this reason, a varied approach to training should be adopted with an understanding of how each method can offer support to the client.

Individual therapy – This therapy is a one to one approach that helps the client identify thoughts and beliefs that might not constructive to positive thinking habits.  During each session, adaptive behaviour is developed as therapeutic techniques which can be used outside this environment.  

Group/Collaborative Skills Training- Group sessions generally allow individuals to learn core modules that will help them to manage distress effectively and regulate emotion. Clients will learn how to understand their emotions and manage them during periods of emotional vulnerability.

Group Meetings & Telephone support – Understanding how others manage their disorder offers insight into comparison and new ways of thinking. It offers opportunity to further understand and explore the difficulties that individuals face each day.
